Help Protect Quincy Farm for the Next Generation!

Quincy Farm is 49 acres of rich farmland along the Hudson River across from the Saratoga National Historical Park. The farm has been in continuous agricultural production since 1777 and had been owned by one family. Now, the land is being cultivated by a new generation of farmers, Luke Deikis and Cara Fraver, and ASA needs your help to ensure that it will remain farmland forever.

Conservation makes land available and affordable for a new generation of farmers

- Luke and Cara are enthusiastic vegetable farmers in their early thirties who represent a growing number of people who want to get started in agriculture and need good, affordable farmland. After looking for four years for a place of their own and apprenticing at two farms downstate, they found Quincy Farm (previously known as Battleview Farm), a perfect fit for their dream to start a vegetable operation. They asked the Open Space Institute (OSI), a national conservation organization, for some creative help to purchase the farm.

OSI asked ASA to be their local partner in conserving the farm and making it affordable for Luke and Cara to purchase at its agricultural value. Now in their first season of production, they are proud to be selling their produce at the Schenectady and Glens Falls farmer’s markets. Next year they plan to expand and start a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) operation to serve local residents.

A vibrant agricultural community with a bright future

- The farming community in Easton is strong and supportive. Farming here is sustainable thanks to the wealth of knowledge and experience gained by generations of hardworking farmers and highly productive soils that can grow a diversity of crops. Also, ASA has been working with farmers in the area since 1990 and has helped protect more than 5,000 acres of land from non-agricultural development. Conservation and a rich agricultural tradition make it a great place for farming.

A historic area with a rich natural and cultural heritage

- Quincy Farm is part of a larger agricultural landscape in the Saratoga National Historic Park region that is largely unchanged since the Revolutionary War. Providing important historical context for visitors to the Battlefield, the agricultural lands along the Hudson River also provide critical habitat for a diversity of wildlife.

ASA needs your help to raise funds for the farm’s conservation

- ASA is responsible for half the cost of the farm’s conservation. We have already secured nearly 70% of the funding needed from our partners Castanea Foundation and Pew Charitable Trust. A generous local donor has also pledged one dollar for every three we raise from the community, making your gift even more valuable. Together, we can protect this bountiful farm and ensure that future generations of farmers will have a place to sow their dreams.
